GIS stands for Geographical Information Systems. But what does it really mean? Is there a difference between GIS and Geography? How can GIS help you grow your business? These are some questions I will be answering. But first, let’s start from the very beginning……
What does GIS mean?
A standard definition is given by ESRI, a global leader in GIS solutions, as follows
“A geographic information system (GIS) is a framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data. Rooted in the science of geography, GIS integrates many types of data. It analyzes spatial location and organizes layers of information into visualizations using maps and 3D scenes.”
Let me simplify that for you. GIS is the science of location. When you start collecting, manage, analyze or share any information that has an address or a location-based element, well you can say that is GIS.
GIS is in everything we do; our work, our home, recreation, religion, I could just go on
Consider the following scenario
Imagine you want to get a location for your proposed business center. What will you first consider? You’ll probably ask yourself “Is there good data network coverage? Are there residential, commercial, or other centers that will bring people to come close to my business outlet?”
Someone who opens a business center close to an office where applications are submitted will probably receive more patronage than one that is close only to a bus stop. Now that is GIS.
